Here’s What You Should Know About Liberland

Liberland is a new libertarian-centric nation sandwiched between Croatia and Serbia. Well, it may not actually be a nation yet. Although it’s founders have declared it a sovereign state, it has yet to be recognized by anyone other than the media. The fact is, the land that Liberland sits on is still effectively controlled by Croatia.

The country was founded by Vít Jedlička, a 31-year-old Czech politician on April 13th, 2015. Jedlička is now acting as President of Liberland. The land is apparently an unclaimed parcel along the Danube river.

“The key idea is voluntary taxes, creating a state so small that there’s almost no state,” Jedlička told AFP

It’s unclear whether other nations–Croatia in particular–will recognize Liberland’s sovereignty. For now, Liberland is little more than an idea. It will be interesting to see what, if anything, will come of Liberland.

Although you can apply for citizenship online, it’s not clear what that gets you. Before you go applying, you may want to wait awhile. This very likely could be an elaborate stunt. And we won’t know if Liberland is real or not until other nations recognize it. You can check out Liberland’s website here.
