Why Everyone’s Talking About No Man’s Sky

Hello Games’ No Man’s Sky isn’t even out yet, and everyone is already excited to play it on PS4 and PC. This indie game, made by a tiny team in England, is getting rave reviews and coverage, before even setting a release date.

But why?

Described as “an ambitious, procedurally generated sci-fi game that not only lets you fly freely amongst the stars, but also lets you discover new planets and explore their secrets,” by GameSpot, is going to offer what we can only describe as “infinite exploration.” Players will be able to fly to countless (really) planets, and simply explore what’s available. Each one will be uniquely different, with its own species, ancient artifacts, and landscape.

Talk about ambitious, especially for a tiny team. By this point, you might be wondering how this team has accomplished what most giant game studios consider daunting. To quote GameSpot, the “answer lies in the passion, experience and drive of those ten individuals.”

The team is composed of only ten developers, all of whom left their jobs in larger studios, so that they could make their own games, and be proud of putting their names on it. Their drive, and reason for going above and beyond, is their need to avoid going back to their old jobs.

With No Man’s Sky, they’re hoping to achieve something that hasn’t been done before, at least not on this vast of a scale. The team describes the game perfectly, however, saying:

“Whether a distant mountain or a planet hanging low on the horizon, you can go there. You can fly seamlessly from the surface of a planet to another, and every star in the sky is a sun that you can visit.

Where you’ll go and how fast you’ll make your way through this universe is up to you. It’s yours for the taking.”
